Cornwall Team Championship – Tehidy vs Truro

Tehidy Park Golf Club commenced the defence of their Cornwall Team Championship title with a 1st round match against Truro, who recently won the Maxam Cup.

The match certainly lived up to its billing with Mike Reynard & John Piner starting their foursomes match with four birdies in the first five holes to claim a two hole lead against Rhys Enoch & Billy Downing. However, by the time the match reached the 18th hole it was the Tehidy pair that were grateful for a halved match as they won the last hole. Tehidy were only to add a further ½ point when Ian Veale & Aaron Ashcroft tied their game with Tom Murtagh & Matt Floyd.

With a dinner-time score line of 3 – 1 in favour of Truro as well as winning the 9th man singles Tehidy were left with the prospect of needing 5 ½ of the 8 singles matches if they were to have aspirations of retaining their crown later in the competition.

The afternoon series of singles cast further doubt on the hopes of Tehidy when Rhys Enoch defeated County Champion, Mike Reynard. Enoch amassed 8 birdies in 15 holes to win 4 & 3. Reynard himself was three under par when conceding the match.

Veale stopped Truro’s momentum when he registered a last hole win over Ben Enoch, which John Piner added to when he beat Darren Booker. However, when Billy Downing defeated Aaron Ashcroft in match four Tehidy were faced with the daunting task of needing 3 ½ points from the final four matches.

Cue Tehidy Park stalwarts Richard & Peter Simmons. Richard claimed his point against Murtagh on the 17th hole as Darren Smith was making short shrift of Matt Gunn. Martin Langford then won his battle with Mark Bicknell on the 16th green leaving Peter Simmons to face a four foot putt on the 17th green to remain 1 up and effectively winning the game for the defending champions.

Simmons was to keep his team mates and supporters on edge as he missed the putt, therefore relinquishing his lead. Simmons now had to hold his nerve to secure a half in his match to win the game overall, anything less and the match would be claimed by the youthful talent of Truro. Simmons exhibited steely cool as he drove into the fairway, played onto the green and rolled his putt to the hole side for a rock solid par 4, the half and the concluding part in a heroic comeback for Tehidy.

Cornwall Bowl – Tehidy vs Budock Vean

Tehidy Park Golf Club played host to Budock Vean in the replay of the rain abandoned 1st round match of the Cornwall Bowl. With home advantage playing a major part in this competition Tehidy were in no mood to allow Budock Vean to upset the form book and ran out eventual winners by a score of 4 – 1. Tehidy now face West Cornwall in the 2nd round, which will be played at the Lelant links.
