Tehidy Park continued their defence of the Cornwall Team Championship when they played against a strong Trevose team in the second round at Newquay.
Fielding an unchanged team, Tehidy were very quickly into their stride when the pairings of Reynard & Piner, Simmons & Simmons and Veale & Ashcroft won the opening three foursomes games. With Trevose claiming the final foursomes point and the 9th man single (¾ point), which is played to settle the eventuality of a 6 – 6 score-line, they retained some hope of overturning the deficit in the eight afternoon singles matches.
In need of 3 ½ points, Tehidy were once again led out by Mike Reynard, on the course where he won the County Championship in May. The early exchanges were dominated by his opponent, Mick Young, to such an extent that Young led by 5 holes after playing the tenth. In match two Mark Blaber (Trevose) was enjoying a 4 hole lead over Richard Simmons and the early signs of a comeback were evident.
Blaber was soon to reduce the overall score to 3 – 2, whilst Reynard began to show the quality that earnt him 27 England Caps. Standing on the 18th tee, one down, Reynard made a winning birdie to secure an improbable half point. (3 ½ – 2 ½). John Piner recorded the first success of the afternoon for Tehidy, winning on the 17th hole, which was followed by a further half point in match four from Veale (5 – 3).
Peter Simmons, in match five put Tehidy within touching distance of victory with a comfortable win on the 16th hole, and although Martin Langford succumbed on the 15th hole in match eight Tehidy were guaranteed a place in the semi-final when Ashcroft recorded a victory on the last hole (7 – 4). Darren Smith contributed a final half point to round off a winning score-line of 7 ½ – 5 ¼.
The competition re-commences in the New Year, with the semi-finals scheduled for February 18th.
