Tehidy Park Golf Club will face Perranporth in the final of the Cornwall Team Championship as they bid to retain the title they won last year. Launceston were the opposition in the semi-final, which was played at St. Enodoc in benign conditions.
Leading out the team was the pairing of Richard & Peter Simmons, who wasted no time in securing the first point of the day with a 6 & 5 win. The lead was then doubled when Ian Veale & Aaron Ashcroft prevailed in a close match, eventually winning on the 17th hole.
In the absence of his regular partner Mike Reynard, John Piner was paired with his son, but it was not to be a happy family affair as they lost by a score of 2 & 1. When the final foursomes point was secured by Tehidy with the pairing of Colin George & Darren Smith a lunch time score of 3 – 1 was enjoyed, with a further 3 ½ points required from eight singles matches to clinch victory.
The ever reliable Peter Simmons took the helm and although stretched by his opponent he registered a one hole win, which was added to by brother Richard, who once again recorded a 6 & 5 win. John Piner Snr. Endured a day he will want to forget as he succumbed to the 2005 County Championship Runner-Up, Richard Jasper, to make the overall score 5 – 2 in Tehidy’s favour.
The man responsible for beating Jasper in the 2005 final, Ian Veale, was in no mood to take any prisoners as he recorded the biggest win of the day, an emphatic 8 & 7 victory, leaving the defending champions requiring a half of a point from the remaining four matches to secure their place in the final on March 11th.
A further 3 ½ points were delivered with wins from George (1 up), Ashcroft (4/3) and Piner Jnr. (2/1) and a ½ point from Smith, who battled back from being 2 down with three holes to play. Final score-line 9 ½ – 3 ¼.
