Great Win for Tehidy
Favourites Tehidy Park Golf Club retained the Cornwall Team Championship on Sunday, but only after a mammoth battle with first time finalists Perranporth.
Although tagged as the ‘clear underdogs’ (West Briton 8 March ’07) Perranporth claimed the first point of the day when Martin Edwards & Richard Trew defeated the much fancied pairing of Richard & Peter Simmons. Their lead was short lived however, as Tehidy Park Secretary, Ian Veale and partner Aaron Ashcroft comfortably defeated Simon Knowles & David Harris, before County Captain John Piner and current County Champion, Mike Reynard beat Chris Llewelyn & Nick Pepper by a score of 3 & 2.
With the final foursome point claimed by Perranporths teenage pairing of Connor Wilson & Sandy Kirton against the more experienced pairing of Colin George & Darren Smith the defending champions lunched with the knowledge that a share of the spoils in the afternoon singles would be enough to retain the trophy courtesy of Martin Langford defeating veteran Bruce Edwards in the 9th man singles match.
As the singles unfolded the match could not have been closer as after 9 holes of each game both teams led in four matches. Leading the way for Tehidy was former County Champion Richard Simmons, who avenged his morning defeat at the hands of Edwards with a 17th hole win. This was immediately followed by another Tehidy point as Veale recorded a comfortable 13th hole win over Trew.
John Piner then put Tehidy Park within touching distance of a ninth Cornwall Team Championship win when he reversed the halfway stage score of his game against former team mate, Pepper, to win on the 17th hole. Although trailing from the first hole of the afternoon, County Champion Reynard stood on the 18th tee one up, knowing that a halved hole would claim the trophy for a successive year. However, his opponent Llewelyn had other ideas as he made a last hole birdie, which kept Tehidy’s faithful following on edge for a further ½ point.
That wait was to be extended as the teenage duo of Wilson & Kirton again notched full points in the afternoon with wins against George & Ashcroft respectively, both by a margin of 4 &3.
With Darren Smith losing an epic match to Simon Knowles it was a case of déjà vu as in the first round against Truro the match hinged on the singles game of Peter Simmons. The stalwart of Tehidy Park did not disappoint as he stood on the Par 3, 16th tee 3 up before firing a winning birdie to secure the title.
Tehidy Park will now go forward to represent Cornwall in the English Club Champions Tournament to be played at Hesketh Golf Club in September.
