CTC Quarter Final

With the Cornwall Bowl and Frank Wills Teams of Tehidy Park Golf Club having already secured their berth in the next round of their respective competitions the pressure was on the defending CTC team to keep alive the dreams of an unprecedented treble for Club Captain David O’Mahony as they took on the might of a youthful Truro team at West Cornwall.

This was the fourth occasion that the two teams had met in the last two years and with Tehidy having won the previous three encounters Truro set about their task by taking a 2 ½ – 2 ¼ lunch time lead.

The signs were even more encouraging for Truro after 9 holes of the afternoon singles when they were ahead in no less than six of the eight matches.

Cue the experience of the Champions of the last two years when one by one the matches started to turn in favour of Tehidy. Mike Reynard beat Mark Bicknell on the 18th as Richard Simmons turned a two hole deficit into a 16th hole win courtesy of five birdies from the 8th hole. Younger brother Peter Simmons found his touch on the greens as he also won, on the 17th hole.

When Tehidy Secretary, Ian Veale halved his match with Welsh International Ben Enoch in the fourth match Tehidy were left needing one more point for victory. Billy Downing stopped the rot for Truro with a last hole win against Andrew Clotworthy and Darren Booker made short work of Colin George in the sixth match to leave the match delicately poised 5 ¾ – 5 in favour of Tehidy.

Although having held a four hole lead after 10 holes Aaron Ashcroft (Tehidy) proceeded to worry his team mates as his lead dwindled to one hole as he played the 16th hole. However, the two solid pars that followed were good enough for a 17th hole win over Alex Boyd to once again give Tehidy Park the spoils. County Captain John Piner concluded the singles with a halved match against Matt Gunn.

The Semi – Final line up will see Tehidy play Trevose and Bude against St Enodoc. The matches are scheduled for the weekend of 17 February 2008.
