Frank Wills Semi Final

When the semi-final of the Frank Wills team event paired Tehidy against Newquay it always promised to be a game fitting of these two successful Cornish Clubs, and it certainly didn’t fail to deliver.

Despite a score-line of 4 – 1 in favour of Tehidy Park the fact that four of the five matches finished on the 18th green exhibited that no quarter was given.

The lead match was close all the way and when they reached the 14th tee with the score at ’all square’ nobody would have blamed the Newquay pair if they had let their thoughts slip forward to the fact that they received a shot on this hole. Nigel James of Tehidy had not read the Newquay script however, and chipped into the hole for a birdie three to win the hole. James and partner, Martin Trewhella held onto that lead to record a last hole victory.

When the pair of Martin Langford and Mark Prouse also recorded a last hole win against the Newquay pair of Chris Case and veteran, Charlie Phillips, the signs were encouraging for Tehidy as they took a 2 – 0 lead.

Mike Roach, a late replacement for the injured David Dunstan paired up with junior member Chris Hoyle in the third match and they arrived at the 18th tee leading by one hole. Although Hoyle played a poor shot into the 18th green, the ever impressive Roach chipped close to record the decisive point and an unassailable lead of 3 – 0.

Club Captain, David O’Mahony partnered Bob Cope to a fourth point, again winning on the last green before the final Newquay pair salvaged some pride and avoided the whitewash with a win over Mike Eddy & Andy Kearney.

Tehidy now play China Fleet Golf Club in the final, after they beat defending champions Perranporth by a score of 3 – 2. The Final is played over 36 holes and is scheduled to take place on March 1st at a venue to be decided.

This coming weekend (10 Feb) sees Tehidy Park bid for a second final as their Cornwall Bowl team take on St. Mellion in the semi-final at Newquay, commencing at 10.00 a.m.
