CTC Semi Final

Tehidy Park Golf Club reached their fourth consecutive CTC final at the expense of West Cornwall, who they defeated by a score line of 8 3/4 – 4.

Following the inclement weather that brought the South West to a temporary stand still earlier in the week the Tehidy team were delighted to see the presence of their London based players; Messrs Simmons, Simmons & George, and once again it proved to be the Simmons brothers who got the team under way securing the first point of the day.

The following two matches to finish were shared, with George & Piner romping to a win on the 12th hole as Lawrance & James struggled to deal with the ever impressive Peter Darlington, who was partnered by Gareth Evans.

The result of the day for the defending champions and one that potentially changed the dynamic of the match was the game involving Veale & Ashcroft against County Champion, Jon Coleman and partner Phil Weaver. Standing on the 16th tee, 3 up, the West Cornwall pair were in control and appeared to be on their way to a valuable win that would have squared the match score. However, the Tehidy pair had other ideas and rattled off the last three holes to half the match.

The edge that this game afforded Tehidy was further aided when Chris Pascoe, playing as the 9th man sealed a win on the 17th hole leaving Tehidy needing 3 1/2 points from the afternoon matches to secure a place in the final that they are becoming accustomed too.

Club Secretary, Ian Veale began their quest for points and wasted no time in beating Joe Brian on the 14th hole. Playing in match five, Colin George posted his second big win of the day when he also won on the 14th hole, beating Seamus Stevens. Aaron Ashcroft further bouyed the mood of the Tehidy camp when he defeated Phil Weaver on the 13th hole, leaving the champions needing just half a point from the remaining five games.

The wait was not a long as Richard Simmons, although playing the 18th hole one down, produced a birdie on the course that saw him win his first County Championship title in 1984 as a 19 year old.

His brother Peter was on the receiving end of an 18th hole birdie to record a rare loss by one hole to Luke Stevens and the match up between last years County Captain, John Piner and the current County Champion, Jon Coleman produced a halved match as did the game between Nigel James and Gareth Evans. The final match on the course saw youngster Ross Lawrance record a one hole win over Dean Tulley to make the overall score-line 8 3/4  – 4.

The final promises to be the golfing equivalent of Federer v Nadal as Tehidy will come up against the all star golfing talent of Trevose Golf Club, whose line-up includes the likes of Ben Westgate, former Tehidy player Mike Reynard, Richard Ackland and Mark Blaber.
