Following the mass expectation that surrounded this years CTC Final between defending Champions, Tehidy and opponents Trevose, players and supporters alike were left in an anti-climatic mood following the lunch-time suspension owing to high winds.
On a date to be arranged Tehidy will resume the final with a 2 1/2 – 2 1/4 lead after completion of the morning foursomes.
Aaron Ashcroft & Ross Lawrance led the Champions out against the stiff opposition of current Welsh Amateur Champion, Ben Westgate and partner David Marshall, who claimed first blood for Trevose with a 16th hole win.
Parity was restored by the stalwarts of the Tehidy team, brothers Richard & Peter Simmons, who claimed the scalps of former England International, Mike Reynard & partner Nick Gammon on the 17th hole.
When Colin George & Martin Langford comfortably defeated John Tremain & Mark Pawley on the 14th hole Tehidy claimed the lead for the first time, however it didn’t look likely to last as Ian Veale & John Piner found themselves four down with four to play against Guy Norris & Richard Ackland. Cue the great escape as the Tehidy pairing preceded to finish birdie, birdie, birdie, par for an unlikely half point.
Chris Pascoe, who was elevated to 9th man when Andrew Clotworthy pulled a muscle, ruling him out of the starting line-up, faced the experience of Mark Blaber, who produced a sound performance to win the points for Trevose, which will prove crucial in the event of a tied match.
Tehidy will re-convene for the eight singles matches knowing that a share of the points will be enough to clinch a fourth straight success. To be continued………….
