As the only two representatives from Tehidy Park to make the match-play stages of the County Championship, Peter Simmons and Ian Veale were paired against each other in the first round.
Peter struck first with a Par at the 2nd hole being good enough to open a one-hole lead, however Veale responded immediately with a birdie at the 3rd hole to level things up. The next seven holes were halved before Veale made another birdie at the 11th and a chip-in eagle at the 13th to forge a two-hole advantage.
Simmons, not to be outdone, responded with a birdie of his own at the 15th hole to cut the deficit to one as they approached the 16th tee. The 16th was halved in Par, before a poor drive from Simmons forced a lay-up on the 17th. With Veale on the green in regulation a two putt would be good enough to win the game, however in a game plagued with sub-standard putting from both players, Veale missed a three foot putt to win.
With both players missing the 18th green in regulation in came down to a chipping competition and with Veale holding a slender lead he played a more cautious chip than his opponent. When Veale missed his Par putt it was left to Simmons to have to hole a 10 foot putt to extend the match into extra holes. His attempt slid narrowly past the side of the hole, and Veale was to progress to the second round with the narrowest of victories.
Josh Hancock (Newquay) was to be the second round opponent for Veale and buoyed with the confidence of his morning victory Veale quickly moved into a three-hole lead after nine holes. Although Hancock made a birdie at the 10th hole to close the gap, Veale then won holes 12 & 13 for a four-hole lead before eventually winnng on the 15th green.
Veales 1/4 final opponent will be Conor Wilson (Perranporth) when they line up on Friday morning. For more information and full details of the draw visit: www.cornwallgolfunion.org.uk
