County Championship

The hope of an all Tehidy final disappeared today as both Richard Simmons & Ian Veale suffered defeats.

In the Quarter Final Richard fell to the local favourite Simon Harper, who displayed some inspired shots. With the match finely balanced as the pair approached the 13th hole (Par 4), Harper holed his second shot for an eagle two. Standing on the 16th tee (Par 3) with a two-hole advantage Harper then holed his tee shot to finish off the game !

Veale progressed to the Semi Final with a Quarter Final victory over Joe Cruse (St Enodoc) after a sudden death play off on the 19th hole. In the Semi Final his opponent was Josh Greenaway (Bowood). As the players approached the 10th tee there was nothing to separate them, but Veale then lost the next 3 holes to be 3 down standing on the 13th tee. Veale won the 13th hole and birdied the 16th hole to reduce the deficit to one, and had the opportunity to square the match with a 10 foot birdie putt on the 17th green, but saw it touch the side of the hole before slipping past.

Veale had one more opportunity to extend the match into extra holes on the 18th green as he stood over a 20 foot birdie attempt, but again the putt touched the edge of the hole before staying above ground.

Greenaway will face Tom Fox (Carlyon Bay) in the 36 hole final to be played tomorrow.

There will be no repeat of the 'A' Team victory for Tehidy Park as the 'B' Team slumped to a 2 – 1 defeat to the home club (St Austell)

County Championship – K/O Stages

Richard Simmons got the Tehidy Park contingent underway in the individual knock-out stages of the Men's County Championship on a bright day at St. Austell, and in doing so put paid to the hopes of local player Darren Wisdom, defeating him on the 16th green.

His win inspired brother Peter, who playing in the match behind him accounted for Freddie Gould (Carlyon Bay) on the 15th green to set up a second round match with his 'big brother'.

Simon Knowles also exhibited his match-play skills by defeating Josh Hancock (Newquay), again on the 16th green. Directly behind the Knowles / Hancock match was Ian Veale who beat Ryan Berry (Trevose & Merlin) on the 15th green.

The only casualty from the Tehidy Park representatives was young Justin Barnard, who playing in his first Championship lost out to Jon Hancock (Newquay) by a score of 3&2. It was a bitter sweet result for Justin, who will now be available for the Tehidy Park 'B' Team, who commence their bid for glory tomorrow morning.

With four players through to the second round there had to be one casualty for the TPGC players as Richard & Peter Simmons shook hands on the 1st tee. On this occasion it proved to be Richard (County Champion 1984 & 1986) who prevailed, securing his win on the 17th hole.

Sadly for Tehidy Park the next casualty proved to be Simon Knowles, who lost out to Joe Cruse (Runner-Up 2010) in a fairly one-sided affair, eventually losing on the 14th hole.

The match-up of the second round proved to be the game of Ian Veale and Mike Reynard, who between them hold 15 County Championships. In a repeat of the 2006 semi-final there was nothing to separate the players, with the lead changing hands no less than 5 times. However, in a reverse of the 2006 match it was to be the turn of Veale on this occasion to advance to the next round, winning on the 17th hole.

The Quarter-Finals, which commence tomorrow morning see Richard Simmons take on local favourite Simon Harper and Ian Veale against Joe Cruse (St. Enodoc). For details of the other Quarter-Finals and all the details of the days matches follow the link :

County Championship – Qualifier

Seven Tehidy Park players took part in the 36-hole Qualifier, bidding for a place in the top 32 from a field of 59.

Justin Barnard led the way for the TPGC contingent with scores of 76 / 71, closely followed by Ian Veale…74 / 74. The Simmons brothers were 21st & 22nd in the list of qualifiers; Richard 74 / 76 & Peter 75 / 76. Simon Knowles was one shot further back with scores of 74 / 78.

There was heartache for Thomas Rowe (78 / 76) as he missed out in a play-off of 5 golfers bidding for 2 places, with fellow 'A' Team hero, Andrew Clotworthy also missing out with a pair of 78's.

The morning semi-finals witnessed Trevose beating Truro (2-1), while Tehidy Park accounted for Carlyon Bay by the same score-line.

The display of golf in the afternoon proved worthy of the final, with Trevose taking first blood in the opening match when Mike Ellis & Joe Micklethwaite defeated Richard & Peter Simmons on the 15th green. Parity was soon restored with Alan Fieldhouse & Thomas Rowe defeating Nick Gammon & Jonathan Tremain on the 16th hole.

With the match evenly poised at one game apiece it was fitting that the deciding game should go to the 18th green, with Ian Veale & Andrew Clotworthy holding a one-hole advantage over Steve Davis & David Cowan. The game was to end that way as the Trevose pair could only manage a bogey 5, with the Tehidy pair sitting four-feet away from the hole having only played 3 shots.

Club Captain, David Edwards was delighted to get his hands on the trophy that Tehidy Park last won in 2007 at Perranporth.
