Having already steered the Frank Wills and Cornwall Bowl teams through the 1st round of their respective competitions, Club Captain Terry Clotworthy turned his attention to the Cornwall Team Championship (CTC).
Tehidy Park were drawn to play Looe Bin Down Golf Club at Perranporth, on what turned out to be a 'breezy' day, with winds gusting in excess of 50 mph.
Debutants, Thomas Rowe and Justin Barnard led the team out in the first of the four foursomes matches, and wasted no time in securing the first point of the day with a victory on the 14th hole. With further wins from Aaron Ashcroft & Peter Simmons (16th), Ian Veale & Simon Knowles (16th) and Colin George & Andrew Clotworthy (15th) a morning whitewash was completed when James Barnard won his singles match, commonly known as the 9th man.
Needing just two points from a possible eight singles matches to seal victory Captain Clotworthy kept faith with the young debutants as Tom Rowe led the line. Tom, who had enjoyed a busy week in the run-up to the match representing the Single Figure Golfer (SFG) against the Ryder Cup Pro's at Trevose ran out of steam in the blustery conditions, eventually losing his match on the 16th hole. Barnard levelled things up with his secod point of the day, and when Club Secretary, Ian Veale secured a victory on the 12th hole the match was won.
Further wins were to follow for Ashcroft (18th), Simmons (15th), Knowles (14th) and Clotworthy (13th). With Colin George accepting a halved match in the final singles encounter a score-line of 11.25 – 1.50 was sealed.
Tehidy Park will now play St. Enodoc in a repeat of the first round match from last year, which St. Enodoc won before going on to secure an overall victory in the competition, and it promises not to be for the faint hearted, when taking into account that St. Enodoc swept aside Launceston 12.75 – 0 in their first round match!
