Gents County Championship – Rd 1

The Knock-Out stages commenced with much promise for the Tehidy Park contingent as six of our players 'pegged' it up in anticipation for the first round.

The first casualty proved to be Chris Hoyle, who had qualified the day before in his first ever appearance in the Championship. It was always going to be a tough ask for Chris to beat the number one seed, and home player Richard Jasper of Launceston. Chris can feel proud of his achievement, and was in no way disgraced by his performance against the +1 handicap Jasper, eventually losing on the 14th hole.

The next TPGC player to be put to the sword in the opening round was the six-time champion Ian Veale, who was humbled by Simon Harper of St. Austell. A three-putt from Veale on the 17th hole saw him go 1 down after Harper saved par from a greenside bunker, and a further three-putt on the 18th put paid to Veale's chances of a record seventh win.

Justin Barnard faced the defending champion Mike Reynard, and held the lead for long periods of the match. Reynard squared the game on the 16th hole, and a half in par on the 17th left it all to play for on the par 5 18th hole. Reynard played his second shot just through the green before Barnard left his approach on the reachable par 5 just short and to the right of the green. Reynard chipped to within 15 feet of the pin, before Barnard played his chip to 10 feet. Reynard then proceeded to show why he is in possession of 20+ England Caps and 9 County Championship Titles (x6 Midlands / x3 Cornwall) as he calmly slotted home his putt for birdie. Barnard thought he had done enough to extend the game to sudden death, but his putt caught the edge of the hole and stayed above ground!

TPGC were guaranteed representation in Round 2 as brothers Richard & Peter Simmons squared up to each other. Older brother Richard stamped his authority on the match as early as the 1st hole as he holed a 60 yard pitch for an eagle 3 ! It was a lead that Richard was not to lose as he eventually closed out the game on the 17th hole.

Andrew Clotworthy then secured further interest in Round 2 as he ground out a 19th hole win over former Champion, Jon Coleman of West Cornwall.

Gents County Championship – Rd 2

Richard Simmons set off in Rd 2 in pursuit of a third County Championship Title against last years Runner-Up Matt Richards of West Cornwall. Sadly for the TPGC interest it was Richards and not Richard that took hold of this match, and he gradually built a commanding four hole lead, which transpired to be enough when he finally recorded a win on the 15th green.

All eyes from the TPGC perspective were now on the 'forever young' Andrew Clotworthy as he stepped onto the first tee against the second seed, Chris Fleming of Perranporth. Nothing could separate the two after 18 holes, so for the second time in a day Clotworthy entered into extra holes. On this occasion it proved not to be a happy ending for Andrew as he was eventually beaten on the second extra hole (20th).

Well done to all of the TPGC entrants, the Club Captain and Members are very proud of you all. All attention to the B Team tomorrow morning…tee-off at 8.25 a.m.

Gents County Championship

Today was qualifying day as competitors bid for a place in the top 32 qualifiers after a 36 hole medal. Conditions proved tricky as a stiff wind played its part throughout the day.

Representation proved positive for Tehidy Park as nine players commenced the day. For the first time in the history of the event the draw would see the number 1 seed play 32, 2 play 31 and so on.

Leading scores from the TPGC contingent were :

150 Richard Simmons & Andrew Clotworthy

151 Peter Simmons

152 Justin Barnard

155 Ian Veale

156 Chris Hoyle

A cruel twist of the draw has yet again pitted the Simmons brothers against each other in Rd 1 tomorrow. Andrew Clotworthy will play past champion Jon Coleman, with Justin Barnard to play the defending champion Mike Reynard. Ian Veale will play Simon Harper, and Chris Hoyle who qualified at his first ever attempt will play the number 1 seed Richard Jasper.

Sadly the trio of James Levick, Tom Rowe and Ross Lawrance will have to wait for the 2014 championship, which will be played at Tehidy Park Golf Club.
