Benign conditions at Perranporth Golf Club welcomed the teams of Tehidy Park and Newquay Golf Clubs for their quarter-final match of the Cornwall Team Championship.
Newquay had the better of the morning foursomes, taking lunch with a 2.5 – 1.5 advantage. Ross Lawrance reduced that deficit with a one-hole victory over David Chapman in the ninth-man singles, leaving Tehidy requiring 4.5 points from the eight afternoon singles matches to claim victory.
New team member Robert MacGregor got Tehidy off to the perfect start with a win over Aaron Stephens in the top singles, but this was quickly cancelled out when Jon Hancock defeated James Barnard. Richard Simmons, Ian Veale and Peter Simmons then added three successive points for TPGC with wins over Kevin Mula, Peter East and Peter Rogers respectively to assume a lead of 6.25 – 3.5
Newquay kept Tehidy waiting for the half point that would secure a semi-final berth when Matthew Lock defeated Justin Barnard (6.25 – 4.5). Two matches remained on the course, and when news reached Captain Gregor that Thomas Rowe was dormy two-up he was able to relax with the knowledge of a guaranteed half-point.
Rowe went on to defeat Rob Randell on the 17th hole, and with daylight fading fast, Andrew Clotworthy, who was one-hole to the good against opponent Trevor Robinson on the 16th tee, agreed to share the spoils to provide a final score-line of 7.75 – 5
In the after dinner speeches Club Captain, Simon Gregor extended his thanks to his team, and their caddies, as well as to the members of Tehidy Park who turned up to support the team, which was also hugely appreciated by the players.
Having overseen three matches over consecutive weekends the Captain can now take a welcome and deserved rest until the New Year, when the team events will re-commence with all three of his teams still doing battle.
The Frank Wills Salver team will play West Cornwall on Sunday, 12 January at Mullion.
The CAW Cornwall Bowl team will play Bude & NC the following weekend, with the date & venue yet to be announced.
The CTC team will also play West Cornwall on Sunday, 16 February (venue tbc).
