Ladies – Park Life

January 2014 Park Life Volume 2 Issue 3

The month began with our Mince Pie and Punch competition on Tuesday 3rd, a 13 hole greensomes with partners drawn. The prize table was as usual looking lovely with all the gift wrapped presents.

Winning the competition with 27 pts on countback were Gill Collins and Barbara Gray, Jackie Thomas and Mary Tremain were 2nd and Nikki Martyn and Shirley Clark were 3rd with 25 pts. The afternoon was rounded off with delicious mince pies, Christmas cake and some decidedly alcoholic punch. Thank you to all the ladies who donated raffle prizes, especially Shirley Clark for making one of her beautiful fruit cakes.

The Clubhouse Christmas festivities got under way with the Carol Night on Wednesday 4th, carols were sung accompanied by Lanner Silver Band. Sunday 8th was Ladies Turkey Trot Day with many of us decorating our trolleys, and indeed ourselves, with

tinsel, reindeer antlers and red noses. There were also several “Christmas” sweaters on show – even a musical one, those who didn’t witness it will need to ask Sue Pascoe for a repeat wearing!

Scoring 33 pts the winner was Jill Phillips, 2nd with 32 pts was Caroline Phillips and 3rd with 31 pts was Linda Ryder.

Tuesday 10th was our last fun competition for 2013, teams of 3 with 2 scores to count but with 4 jokers – 2 on holes 1-6 and 2 on 7-13. Jokers had to be decided before beginning the round and scores on joker holes were doubled, so tactics (and math) came into play. Winning the competition with a fantastic 74 pts were Lady Captain, Pauline Penna and Jenny Hamilton. 2nd were Kathy Mann, Linda Ryder and Margaret Richards with 3rd place taken by Eileen Goundry, Lyn O’Keefe and Jane Hollis.

The evening of the same day was our Christmas Dinner and 47 ladies arrived at for a glass of fizz, provided by the Ladies Section, and nibbles which were very kindly supplied by Martin and Kathy. The 6 dinner tables, all named after reindeer, were

presided over by members of the Ladies Committee and, as in previous years, ladies drew lots for their seats. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delicious meal and then settled back for the “entertainment” courtesy of the Ladies Committee. Our Lady Captain

looked very fetching in her Santa outfit, however the highlight was Kate Shipman in her reindeer suit – a sight not seen very often but which has been captured on camera and will be posted in the locker room shortly!

The Christmas Dinner Dance on Saturday 14th was very well attended; an excellent 4 course meal was followed by a terrific band which had everyone up dancing the night away. Unfortunately the weather finally caught up with us the next day and the high winds and persistent rain put paid to the Christmas Mixed. However 58 people attended the dinner and it turned out to be a very good evening.

The weekly Thursday night Quiz goes from strength to strength attracting more teams than ever this year. Using different quiz masters means questions and categories are varied so there is usually something for everyone. With teams of up to 4 people and at only £1 per person it is a fun evening, if you haven’t been to one yet give it a try.

The small volunteer group of members who work on the course every Tuesday morning were very kindly treated to a carvery lunch on Christmas Eve, courtesy of Martin and Kathy. The club also bought them a drink in appreciation of all the work they have done to

improve the course over the last 12 months.

Martin and Kathy have asked that their thanks be passed on to all the ladies who helped with the Christmas decorations this year.

The ever popular Singing Seagulls swooped in to provide entertainment on the night of the Christmas Draw, Friday 20th. There were some great prizes to be won including food hampers, chocolates and wine. Many of our ladies were lucky enough to be winners and there is a full list of prize winners on the main notice board.

This year instead of the Jazz Christmas Eve lunch we ate to the sound of Michael Williams, who performed hit songs by Elvis and Neil Diamond and proved to be a big hit with all the diners.

Many members visited the club on Christmas Day to celebrate and to share a drink or two with friends. Over 100 people sat down to a wonderful Christmas Lunch, with a choice of starters and main courses ranging from Chilled Seafood Platter to Homemade

Game Soup, traditional Roast Turkey to Poached fillet of Brill the lunch was pronounced a huge success.

Happy New Year to you all!! I do hope everyone is cleaning and polishing and getting all your golf gear ready for the season ahead, hopefully with good weather to play in. The Mince Pie and Punch was successful as ever with Barbara Gray and Rosemary Wedlock taking the honours from Mary Tremaine and Jackie Prouse. The table looked delightful with so many gifts all wrapped up beautifully and a lot of help from Amanda. Thanks to you all for also supporting our raffle which raised £60 for our section. Thanks to Jane and Pam and all those who donated prizes.

The Turkey Trot, yet another favourite, was a good day with my Vice Jackie doing the presentation.

The Christmas Festivities were all very jolly and one of our highlights was our Christmas Dinner, everyone seemed to have a really good evening and I have heard Rudolph is now wondering somewhere around Spain!! Didn't she do well? Thanks go to Martin and Kathy who not only gave us an excellent meal but provided our very nice nibbles free of charge.

The December Stableford results: Div 1; Sue Houghton and Liz Plechowicz, Div 2; Rosemary Wedlock and Jenny Hamilton and Div 3; Lin O'Keefe and Penny Allen. Well done Ladies.

Finally, I have been visiting the sick and I can report all are doing well. I think they are just lying low waiting for sunshine!! Get well soon all those who have been in hospital and those about to go in. We hope we will all have a healthy 2014.
