As with the quarter-final, beautiful conditions welcomed the teams and phenomenal support of both Tehidy Park and West Cornwall Golf Clubs for the semi-final, which was played at Newquay GC.
On this occasion Tehidy had the better of the morning foursomes, taking lunch with a 3 – 1 advantage, before Chris Hoyle, who was called into the team at the eleventh hour, added a vital three quarters of a point by winning the ninth-man singles against Jon Clatworthy with a one-hole victory. Tehidy would need three of the eight afternoon singles to secure a final berth for the first time since 2009.
Once again Robert MacGregor led Tehidy on their way with the perfect start, securing a 16th hole win over Dean Tulley in the top singles match. However things were about to get very anxious for the Tehidy Captain, Simon Gregor and the faithful followers as West Cornwall reeled off the next four matches……(scores on the doors TPGC 4 – 5 WCGC)
The highlight of the four West Cornwall wins came from Harry Hall, who in making birdies at both the 17th and 18th holes, evidenced the form that has put him on the radar for the England amateur scene, and also secured a one-hole win over a very unlucky Ross Lawrance.
Cue the stalwarts Ian Veale, playing in his 30th year of CTC competition, and the ever dependable Peter Simmons. Veale triumphed in a closely fought battle with Alex Glasson on the 17th hole, a score-line that was emulated by Simmons over Matt Walker, and more significantly the third all important match winning point.
When Thomas Rowe rounded off a successful day by defeating Peter Darlington, who won the County Championship at Newquay in 1997 the afternoon singles were shared four a piece, providing an overall score-line of TPGC 7.75 – 5 WCGC.
Both Captains thanked their teams and caddies for a match that was played in a great spirit, in front of fantastic support, which was testament to both Clubs.
The final will be contested between Tehidy Park & Trevose on Sunday, 16 March at Perranporth. Prior to that Captain Gregor's attention will turn to the Frank Wills final where his team will play Newquay at West Cornwall on Sunday, 2 March.
