The Cornwall Golf Union Maxam Cup was today played at West Cornwall Golf Club and the Tehidy Park team brought down the curtain on Captain, Simon Gregor's year by providing him with a win which would see him collect his fifth….yes, that's right, his fifth trophy on behalf of the Club during his emphatic year !
The format for the event, which is contested by 16 Cornish Golf Clubs, sees each club field three foursomes pairs, playing medal strokeplay off scratch, with the best two scores to count in the morning and again in the afternoon for an aggregate score.
The Tehidy Park team consisted of brothers, Richard & Peter Simmons, who returned a morning score of 73 (+4), Justin Barnard & Thomas Rowe 77 (+8) and Robert MacGregor playing with Ian Veale, who would return the best score of all of the morning rounds, 69 (level) despite bogeys on the final two holes ! Their team score of 142 would see the Tehidy boys take lunch in joint third position with Trevose, behind leaders Truro Golf Club (140) and Perranporth (141). The host club (West Cornwall) were not far off the pace, in fifth place on 146.
Scoring was to prove difficult in the afternoon as a freshening wind greeted the players, and of the teams occupying the first five positions from the morning round only the hosts would improve on their morning effort. Perranporth were the first club to play their way out of contention when they added a p.m. effort of 150, for a total of 291. The leaders from the morning, Truro, were to fare worse still as they recorded 155 for a 295 total.
Tehidy Park, who were playing with the hosts added 143 to their morning total of 142 to post a target of 285 (Simmons & Simmons 74, Barnard & Rowe 78, MacGregor & Veale 69), and it was a target that was to be caught as West Cornwall recorded 139 to tie things up at the top of the leaderboard. When Trevose could only manage 147 for a 289 total the question of countback criteria came to the fore.
The total of the discarded score from both the morning and afternoon would settle the day, and when enough fingers and thumbs were counted up the scores of Tehidy (155) was just enough to pip West Cornwall (157) for the title of Maxam Cup Champions.
Captain Gregor was quite visibly in a state of shock as he accepted the trophy from the County President, and life long friend, David Inch, but as always spoke with great aplomb as he thanked his team for their efforts, and West Cornwall together with the County Officials for staging the event.
In the sideshow to the main event the West Cornwall pair of Matthew Richards & Dean Tulley were to get a little revenge as they bagged the prize for the best individual pair (71 + 67) to pip MacGregor & Veale (69 + 69) on countback.
