A rare report to have to type as a Tehidy team fall at the first hurdle, but alas it has happened as the Cornwall Bowl team lost 3 – 2 to their opponents Killiow at a windswept Mullion Golf Club.
The match took a bizarre twist with Tehidy holding a slender lead (2 – 1) after wins from the pairings of John Hutchings & Peter Turner (3&1) and Phil Robbins & Malcolm Bennetts (2 Up).
Lee Williams & Les Driver fought back from 2 Down with two to play to force extra holes, as did the pairing of Ben Hosking & Justin Old, who were 4 Down with five holes to play ! Cue the tension for both teams.
The opposition in the Williams/Driver game found the green on the Par 3 first extra hole with a tee shot that would have graced a CTC match. With the Tehidy pair recording a bogey four, a safe two-putt for the Killiow pair squared the match at two games a piece.
The match now came down to the game involving Hosking & Old, and understandably the outcome evidenced four very nervous golfers. The Killiow pairing needed three shots to find the putting surface, and even then sat 18 feet from the pin. Things looked good for the Tehidy pair, who were just off the green with their tee-shot; however a string of mis-hit chip shots led to a total of six shots for the hole, and when their Killiow opponents negotiated a two-putt the victory was sealed !
