Tehidy Park commenced their defence of the A Team Championship on Monday morning with a 2.5 – 0.5 win over Truro Golf Club in the first round before easing past St. Enodoc in the afternoon by a score-line of 3-0.
The team of Richard & Peter Simmons, Ian Veale & Thomas Rowe and Robert MacGregor & Ross Lawrance returned on the Tuesday to face surprise package Looe Golf Club, who had beaten Trevose & West Cornwall to reach the semi-final. It was however, to be the end of their journey as Tehidy Park set up a final clash with the hosts Bude, with a straight forward 3 – 0 win.
Despite strong winds the golf displayed in the final was of the highest quality, and it was Bude that claimed the first point as Danny Vanstone & Ryan Curtis defeated Veale & Rowe on the last hole. With the Simmons brothers in control playing in the third game the match hinged on the game between the in form Adam Curtis and his partner Simon Greatbatch, playing against MacGregor & Lawrance. Bude led by one hole playing the 18th hole, and with a rock solid birdie on the Par 5 18th it was Bude that would take the title for the first time on 40 years.
The action turned to the individual championship on Wednesday with 60 players attempting to make the cut off point of 32 that would proceed to the matchplay stage. The sole survivor from the Tehidy contingent is Robert MacGregor, who secured the fourth seed with two solid rounds of 73. Veale fell short of the cut for the first time in his 30 years of playing in the championship with uncharacteristic rounds of 80 & 79, scores that were littered with double bogeys !
Andrew Clotworthy recorded a score of 158, which would see him in a playoff with three others, playing for the two remaining places. Louis Gough grabbed the first of the two available slots with a birdie at the first hole. Clotworthy, Max Stockwell (Bowood) & Conor Jenkins (Bude) proceeded to the 2nd hole after they all made par. Another birdie was produced at the 2nd playoff hole, and to the expense of Clotworthy & Jenkins it would go to Stockwell.
The first round of the knock out stage commences on Thursday morning, with MacGregor drawn to play Cary Clark of Merlin. More updates to follow and also at the following link…..
