CTC – Quarter Final

With a team containing five 'plus' handicap golfers Trevose proved too strong for the experienced Tehidy Park team on a bright and somewhat benign day at Perranporth.

Opening the foursomes exchanges were Robert MacGregor & Ian Veale for Tehidy Park against Welsh international Ben Westgate and partner Steve Davies in a match which went the distance, going the way of Trevose by the odd hole.

Martin Langford & Andrew Clotworthy then faced Mark Hilton & Nick Gammon in a match which would see Trevose extend their lead with a win on the 16th hole.

Tehidy etched a point on the board with a flawless display of golf from the Simmons brothers (Peter & Richard) over Carl Burley & Niall Hutton, who themselves were level par when losing on the 18th hole.

Honours were shared in the basement foursome between Tom Rowe & Justin Barnard playing against John Tremain & Guy Norris…..to see Trevose take lunch with a 2.5 – 1.5 lead, leaving Tehidy Park  needing to win five of the afternoon eight singles matches.

MacGregor would set Tehidy Park on their way playing against Davies, and looked set to eat into the deficit when standing 2 up playing the 14th hole. However Davies was not done, and reeled off four of the last five holes to win 2 up.

Veale would put up some resistance for the 2014 Champions with a 16th hole win over Gammon in the second of the singles exchanges.

The third singles would match up Langford, playing off a respectable 3 handicap against Westgate who plays off a +4 handicap……though in this format everything is played off scratch ! Westgate stood on the 16th tee with a one – hole lead, and when he found the green with his tee shot on the par three hole, as opposed to that of his opposite number he looked set to increase his advantage. Langford chipped to 20 feet from a difficult spot through the green before seeing Westgate lag his approach putt to within 2 feet. Langford then did what he does best and holed his par putt to the joy of the assembled Tehidy support, and shock of Westgate as he proceeded to fluff his own par putt to see the match go all square ! With both players missing the green on the par four 17th it was Westgate who showed the class that has seen him scale the heights of the amateur game, managing to escape with a par to once again take a one – hole lead, before driving the short par four 18th to close out the match by one hole. (A huge effort Bonny – one you can be very proud of).

With Clotworthy suffering at the hands of Hilton in the fourth singles (5&4) Trevose were left needing just a half from the remaining four singles and Tehidy needing to win them all !

That half of a point was delivered by Norris, who defeated Simmons (P) on the 15th hole at the same time as Barnard romped home with a handsome victory over Hutton on the 13th.

Richard Simmons and Tremain shook on a halved match after 17 holes with their match at all square, and at two down in the middle of the 17th fairway with a huge rain cloud lingering, and with the overall result confirmed Rowe shook the hand of Burley before making for the clubhouse!

Well played Trevose, you will take some stopping.
