The Tehidy Park Cornwall Bowl team have progressed to the Semi-Final, where their opposition will be Truro after a nail-biting 3 – 2 win over Carlyon Bay in a match played at Newquay yesterday.
Two of the five games finished on the 19th hole, with both of them in Tehidy's favour ! Mike Jacka & David Bailey led the team out as the top pairing, securing their point with a solid gross par on the 1st extra hole. (1-0) Lee Medlen & Phil Robbins found themselves outplayed in the third game, eventually losing on the 15th hole. (1-1)
Whilst the Tehidy Park pairing of Peter Turner & David Spencer narrowly lost on the 18th hole, Simon Davey & Dale Band won on the 17th hole to once again restore parity in the match (2-2).
All attention turned to the Tehidy Park pairing of Bobby Stephens & David Collins, who had twice forged a three-hole lead in their game. Despite that their opponents forced the game into extra time, and with the Carlyon Bay pairing safely on the 19th hole in regulation they appeared to be the favourites to steal the game. Collins pitched to within 6 feet for Tehidy's third shot, before the Bay pairing putted to two feet, also in three shots. Stephens missed his par putt, sending it five feet past the hole, which Collins manfully holed for a five. Carlyon Bay now had a two-foot putt the win the game and the overall match, which in the process of missing they managed to send four and half feet past. Further drama as they unexplicably missed the next putt to gift Tehidy their passage to the semi-final. "That's Matchplay" as we often hear !!
The semi-final is scheduled for the weekend of 6/7 February, with the exact date, time & venue to be confirmed.
