As Hugo Boss ambassador Henrik Stenson was becoming the first Scandinavian to win a Major Championship, the Ladies of Tehidy Park were putting paid to Truro’s defence of the Gammon Trophy at West Cornwall Golf Club.
The teams were led out by former County Champion Rachael Lloyd-Phillips (Tehidy) and this years Runner-Up, Emily Wilson (Truro). Whilst these two were engaging in a ‘nip and tuck’ match that would go to extra holes, it was the final match between Katie Sandow (Tehidy) and Kat Stopford that would finish first and draw first blood for Tehidy, with Sandow winning on the 13th hole, after a fine display of long hitting and clinical finishing.
This match was cancelled out by Kat’s daughter Jas, as she defeated Hilary Wood on the 14th hole (1 – 1). The experience of Christine Williams would once again afford Tehidy the lead as she won on the 14th hole (2 – 1). The match would then turn in the favour of Truro, as first Laura Andrew defeated Gloria Sandow, andthen Olivia Trewhella defeated Lyn Newby (2 – 3).
Karen Langford then levelled matters with a win on the 17th, which turned the attention back to Lloyd-Phillips and Wilson who were by now playing the 20th. With Lloyd-Phillips finding the green on the Par 5 hole with her second shot the pressure was on Wilson, and it was to tell as Wilson mishit her approach shot to hand the win to Lloyd-Phillips and her Tehidy team, who were jubilant to reach the semi-final, where they will now play St. Mellion on Sunday, 14th August at a venue yet to be confirmed.
