Tehidy Park’s Cornwall Bowl team will feature in the Final against Newquay Golf Club after they defeated last year’s Runners-Up, Whitsand Bay by a score-line of 4 – 1 in the semi-final played at St. Enodoc.
Bobby Stephens & Peter Turner, giving two shots in the top match set the ‘boys’ on their way with a win on the 17th hole (2&1). In match two Dale Band & David Bailey meant business, building a four-hole lead after just six holes. They retained that lead through ten holes, eventually winning on the 13th hole (6&5), to give Tehidy Park a 2 – 0 lead.
David Collins & Steve Rogers were involved in a ‘see-saw’ match, before taking a one-hole lead to the 18th tee courtesy of winning the Par 3, 17th hole. A halve on the 18th, which they duly delivered would secure their match and the overall game, in holding an unassailable 3 – 0 lead.
Tony Barbagallo & Vince Barton were involved in a great tussle; seemingly comfortable, if that is ever possible, having built a three-hole lead after six holes. The Whitsand Bay pairing showed why they reached the final last year as they chipped away at that lead, finding themselves now 1 up on the 18th tee ! Barbagallo & Barton bravely won the last to secure a halved match, which, with the game won was followed by Phil Robbins & Malcolm Bennetts taking an honourable half with their opposition to secure a berth in the final.
Club Captain, David Ryder remarked “I was very proud of the boys…..10 players, 10 caddies, and a travelling reserve; great commitment and a great result”. He continued “The match was played in a great spirit, the golf course at St. Enodoc was in great condition, with everyone on the Tehidy Park team enjoying their day out, and are looking forward to the final against Newquay”.
The date of the Final is 5 March at a venue yet to be confirmed. On the same day the Frank Wills Salver Final will also be contested.
