Cornwall Bowl Final

Tehidy Park Golf Club were bowled over in the final of the CAW Cornwall Bowl by a strong Newquay team that handled the gale force winds better on the day.

Prior to play getting underway at Perranporth officials pondered whether to postpone the day’s play as winds gusted up to 70 mph, but after a slight delay it was decided that play would commence.

From the outset the Newquay pairings exhibited their links prowess as the first pairing of Martin Chapman & Dave Stephens raced into a five-hole lead after just six holes against the Tehidy Park pairing of Bobby Stephens & Peter Turner.       Stephens & Turner battled away and made some inroads into the deficit, but when they lost the 15th hole to a par it was Newquay that would draw first blood with a 4&3 win.

Newquay would improve that position with a win on the 14th hole in match two when Sean Rooney & Guy Westaway put paid to the challenge of Vince Barton & Mike Jacka, and the overall picture did not improve for Tehidy Park as news drifted in from afar of matches four and five going the way of Newquay with emphatic wins for Gareth Ward & Brendan Cavanagh (7&6) over David Collins & Steve Rogers, and David Moore & Micky Bowler (unbeaten in five matches) over Phil Robbins & Malcolm Bennetts on the 13th hole (6&5) to secure the victory.

With the remaining match between Tehidy Park’s David Bailey & Dale Band and Dave Goodwin & Colin Duke of Newquay standing at all square after 16 holes the players agreed to shake hands on a halved match to leave the overall score-line in Newquay’s favour to the tune of 4.5 – 0.5.

Both Captains thanked their teams, caddies, ever present supporters, the Cornwall Golf Union and Perranporth Golf Club for their hospitality on the day.

Whilst Newquay will undoubtedly celebrate their maiden victory in the Cornwall Bowl team event during the remainder of the day, and maybe in the days to follow, for Tehidy Park, and Club Captain David Ryder, attention will now turn to the CTC Final in two weeks time (19 March) where they will take on Bowood Park at Newquay Golf Club, as they bid to win the title for a twelfth time in their history.

Well played Newquay Golf Club; enjoy your celebrations, they are well deserved……..oggy, oggy, oggy 🙂
