CTC Quarter-Final

Tehidy Park lost their grip on the title they won last year when losing a tense quarter-final battle with old friends, Trevose Golf & Country Club.

On a bitterly cold morning at Newquay Golf Club the teams lined up with many layers on to combat the cold!   Ian Veale & Robert MacGregor got the defending champions off to a winning start by securing their point with a win on the 18th green against Mark Grootz & Steve Davies, despite having been 2 down after 11 holes.   The Barnard brothers, Justin & James followed this with a 1 up win of their own over the pairing of former tour player Matt Morris and Mark Hilton, himself a former England International.     Trevose secured their first point of the day, courtesy of Nick Gammon and John Tremain over Richard & Peter Simmons.     When Matt Lock & Tom Chapman shook hands with opponents Carl Burley & Guy Norris for a hard fought half Tehidy Park took possession of a slight lead (2.5 – 1.5) at lunch.

In the 9th man singles match Joe Ibbs-George (Trevose) got the better of Paul Collins which gave Trevose the knowledge of winning the eight singles to win the overall match.

Newly elected County Captain and Tehidy Park Secretary/Manager, Ian Veale would lead the team out in the singles on the course that he learnt to play the game, and he would use that local knowledge to record a 16th hole win against Grootz.    In the second singles it was the turn of Trevose, courtesy of Davies against MacGregor to notch up a point. Richard Simmons then lost against Morris (1 down) before brother and Club Captain Peter, defeated Tremain.    The first four singles were shared two apiece, with all to play for in the remaining four matches.

Trevose gained the impetus when Burley literally putted Lock out of the game, in the process winning on the 18th. James Barnard kept hopes alive when finishing all square with Hilton. Tehidy Park now needed a win and a half from the two matches on the course, both standing at 1 down on the seventeenth tee.      It proved not to be as Gammon won the 17th hole to secure a win against Chapman and the match winning point to book a semi-final berth for Trevose against West Cornwall.      Justin Barnard & Norris finished all square for a final score-line of 7.25 – 5.5 in favour of Trevose.
