President’s Trophy Success

The Tehidy Park President’s Trophy team eventually arrived at Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club for the long-awaited final against West Cornwall following an earlier postponement due to the weather. It was well worth the wait as they were treated to a most beautifully sunny day with little wind and a clear blue sky.

In the format which sees three category 1, three category 2 and three category 3 golfers playing singles match-play off handicap, Darren Vincent would once again get the Tehidy Park team underway. What a lead man he has proven to be when he not only secured his point but in doing so maintained a 100% record during the campaign.

Sean Pollard would follow his club mate and it would take the whole 18 holes to separate him and his opponent. Pollard stood two down with four holes to play. His opponent holed a putt from 20 feet to retain his advantage only for Pollard to then win the 16th and 17th to stand on the 18th tee all square. With both players a long way from the pin on the 18th green a three-putt from the Tehidy man would hand his opponent a 1-hole victory.

Elsewhere out on the course the three category 2 matches were signed, sealed and delivered by the Tehidy Park trio of Simon O’Mahony, Graham Elliott and Josh Chapman in double quick time (4 – 1) with 5 points required for victory.

That victory was edging ever closer as Simon Inwards in match three held a two-hole lead standing on the 17th tee, which was a guaranteed half a point and Joe Venn in match seven was two-up playing the long 16th. Inwards would lose the 17th and the drama continued as he pulled his tee shot on the par 5,18th hole out of bounds!

The crowd didn’t know where to look………Inwards on 18 or Venn on 16? With a half point guaranteed in the Inwards match the attention focused on Venn as just a half on the 16th hole would guarantee another match winning half point, but Venn wasn’t going to settle for that as he calmly stroked home a putt from 5 feet to claim a 3&2 win and more importantly an all-important fifth point.

With the Inwards game eventually finishing all square, combined with the half points agreed in the matches involving Alex Hinds and Andrew Clotworthy a final score-line of 6½ – 2½ would secure the Cornwall Golf Union President’s Trophy for Tehidy Park Golf Club for the first time in their long and established history.

Nothing can take away the pain and hurt suffered by Tricia Andrew and her family at the sad loss of her husband and Tehidy Park Club President, Phil Andrew. Phil’s passing was felt by all at the golf club and local community. Aptly named the President’s Trophy, it is a victory that Club Captain Peter Simmons has dedicated to the memory of Phil.

Well done and thank you to all concerned, players, caddies and supporters. The Club are very proud of you for writing yet another chapter in the history of Tehidy Park Golf Club.
