The teams of Tehidy Park and Bude & North Cornwall arrived at Trevose Golf Club on a bright yet cold morning to do battle in the first round of the 2019/20 Cornwall Team Championship.
Whilst Tehidy Park would take first blood with Captain, Mark Hollis winning the toss it was otherwise to prove a tough morning for last year’s beaten finalists as they trailed at lunch by a score-line of 3.75 – 1 (results below)
This would mean that Tehidy Park would require five and a half points from the eight singles matches to progress to the next round; a tall order against a Bude side with the bit between their teeth after a great morning performance.
Tehidy Park rolled back the years with their singles order, calling on the Simmons brothers to lead out the singles, and how it proved to be a great decision from Captain Hollis.
Richard Simmons recorded a superb one-hole victory against Bude’s top player, Ryan Curtis, just as younger brother Peter was making a birdie on the par four 17th to seal a 2&1 win over former Devon County Champion, Danny Vanstone – the comeback had commenced!
The two wins above weren’t the first points recorded for Tehidy Park in the afternoon as both James Barnard and Tom Chapman had swept aside their opposition, Gary Stone and Harry Wellington respectively, both by the huge margin of 7&6. These four wins had now edged Tehidy Park ahead in the match and the signs were looking good elsewhere as they searched for a further one and a half points.
Despite Harry MacAuley offering some resistance for Bude when he defeated Tom Rowe on the 15th hole, the remaining matches became somewhat of a procession for Tehidy Park as first Rob MacGregor defeated Laurie Bridges. Then Tehidy Park junior and club champion Josh Chapman defeated the experienced Steve Rickard on the 16th hole to seal the match, and when Matthew Lock secured the final game on the 18th green against Mark Jenkins the comeback was complete to the relief of the new Tehidy Park Golf Club Captain, Mark Hollis.
Meanwhile, across at Lanhydrock Golf Club the President’s Trophy match between Tehidy Park and opponents China Fleet was edged by the finest of margins by China Fleet, 5 – 4 (report to follow)
