Following the desperate weather of the previous 48 hours the teams of Tehidy Park Golf Club & Radnor arrived at Killiow Park to find the sun shining on a beautiful October day for what was a local derby in the first round of the Cornwall Golf Union Frank Wills Salver.
It was to be Radnor that dictated the early pace, which they converted into a 2 – 0 lead upon winning the first two foursomes. Tehidy Park would now need to win the remaining three games if they were to see the second round and a potential date with either Carlyon Bay or Mullion.
The pairing of Chris Hoyle & Ryan Reed would afford some hope when they recorded a 16th hole win, and that was backed up by the TPGC pairing of Justin Harrington & Carl Band who leveled the score-line with an emphatic 14th hole victory.
All attention turned to the fourth foursomes match on the course, and with the Tehidy Park pairing of Tom James & Ben Lamb holding a three-up lead with three holes to play the Tehidy Park Captain, Mark Hollis, could have been forgiven for starting to prepare his post match ‘winning’ speech !
The saying “it’s a funny old game” was never more apt when the Radnor pairing rallied to win the final three holes – into extra holes and the speech was tucked away for the time being. Testament to the pairing of James & Lamb when they held their nerve to win the 19th hole, which would send the Tehidy Park team, caddies and supporters to the ’19th hole’ to celebrate a hard fought win that would see Hollis once again editing his words !
Round 2 takes place on the 23/24 November with opponents and venue to be confirmed.
