Being Captain of Tehidy Park Golf Club is one of the greatest pleasures and privileges of my life. A club like ours is steeped in history and has built a reputation within the Cornish golfing community and beyond for just over 100 years.
My golfing career started back in 1976 when I was first introduced to the club by my late father Roy who was a member himself from the early 1970’s. My first experience of this wonderful game was having lessons with Jack Gayle the club’s former professional on the left hand side of the par 5, 6th hole then now the 11th. I became a junior member in 1978 and worked hard to improve my game eventually becoming a category 1 golfer.
I have been fortunate to represent the Club in CTC, Frank Wills, Maxam Cup and B Teams over numerous years. I love to play competitive golf and been lucky enough to get my name on a few trophies over the years. I had a period away from the sport when the kids were growing up and then decided to return to Golf a few years ago.
TPGC has a very special place in my heart and I have sat on various committees over multiple years and I have also had the pleasure of serving as Social Secretary for the last couple of years or so. I do believe it is good to put back into something that has given me something special over so many years.
You will always have a very warm welcome at Tehidy Park Golf Club and its members are renowned for being a very friendly bunch. So please feel free to come and visit this little gem of a club in the Cornish Countryside you will not be disappointed I for one would love to meet you.
Dear Fellow members of Tehidy Park Golf Club (TPGC).
I am writing to you all today to let you know that our current Vice Captain and future Captain of TPGC Martin Weeks has invited me to be his Vice Captain starting in October 2023. I am delighted and honoured to be asked and really pleased to inform you that I have accepted his invitation and really look forward to working with Martin and supporting him
through his Captaincy.
My family have a long association with TPGC, my late Father (Phil) and my Mum Barbara (Barbs, Dancing Queen) became members in November 1976, Barbs is still a Social Member and is often seen at our social events hogging the dance floor even at the tender age of 85. I too have been a member on and off for many years, however my playing time was limited in
the early years due to my commitment to playing football. After I had finished playing at 40, I then became active within Truro City’s Youth Development helping with fund raising, sponsorships organising events and tournaments along side my coaching roles and running
mini soccer and youth football teams from Under 9’s to Under 16 age groups.
Finally, after 11 years of doing this, it was time to stop and now concentrate on my golf. In 2016 I started playing golf on regular basis for the first time and was now entering competitions and just last year I won my first major competition, The Seniors Open and, in the club’s, centenary year too! I was also given the opportunity by our Current Captain Dan
Issacs to play for TPGC in the Cornish Bowl team thank you to Dan for his encouragement support and the opportunity to represent our club.
My activities away from the golf club: I am a self-employed Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) contracting to a local firm in Truro Called Duchy IFA, you may have seen our company logos on the advertising for the Social Charity Events that Martin put’s on throughout the year as I do like to help with sponsorship for the good causes we support. I am married to
Louise (Lou) and have three grown up Boys one of whom has recently joined TPGC. I know I have Lou’s backing with this decision, she is so supportive in everything I have done in the past and continue to do.
I really enjoy being part of Tehidy Park Golf Club playing and socially, and as mentioned I am looking forward to working alongside Martin and other areas of the club to help keep the club moving forward. Thank you to Martin, for giving me this opportunity. One more thing, I am a very approachable person and many of you already know me, but if you don’t, please stop me and say hello it would be nice to get to know more people, it also breeds a friendly atmosphere, don’t forget “it’s nice to be nice”
My very best wishes
Phil Staton
My name is James Levick and I am honoured to be the General Manager at Tehidy Park Golf Club. The duties within my role are to provide the highest possible service to the Club’s 750 members and provide up to date and relevant information to the Club’s Officers and Directors. In addition, I have executive responsibility for all aspects of the administration of the Club and its premises within the framework of the Club’s Business Plan, policies, procedures and approved budgets.
I started playing golf at the age of 9 at Tehidy and have been part of the club ever since. My passion and interest for the game has always been strong and this is what inspired me to commence a career working in the golf industry.
In 2013 I joined the pro shop team at West Essex GC and gradually worked my way up from Pro Shop assistant to becoming Secretary/General Manager in 2018.
In 2020 I was offered the chance to move back home to Cornwall to join the team at St Austell GC and this couldn’t have come at a better time with the birth of our son Joshua and has enabled our families to be there to support us and we welcomed the birth of our daughter Bethany in early 2022.
It was a fantastic experience working at St Austell and helping the Club go from strength to strength. In early 2023, I was offered the opportunity to take on the General Manager role at Mullion which I really enjoyed. But when the General Manager role came up for Tehidy, I knew I had to apply, as these opportunities do not come up very often and I really wanted to be part of the Club’s future plans.
Tehidy Park Golf Club has been a huge part of my life and will always be one of my favourite courses to play. I feel the course offers a great challenge for all golfing abilities along with consistently high-quality F&B, and a brilliant club membership. This combination then creates the ideal golf club membership and visitor experience.
Along with the team here at Tehidy, I am dedicated and passionate about driving the Club forward to a successful and bright future.
James
I was born and bred in Cornwall but have spent 40 odd years away managing to return in 2017, at long last. I studied Soil Science at Reading University where I developed a strong interest in microbiology.
My first job was with Plymouth Polytechnic now a University working as a Microbiology technician involved in teaching and research and finally onto Bath University where I managed the Pharmacy and Pharmacology technical team …so basically went from bugs to drugs.
I never thought I would play golf as I was hockey mad for most of my life, playing from the age of 12 for Penzance, I played at county and territorial level but have to confess I did play for Devon! While playing for Exmouth we managed to qualify for the very first national league in fact I played in the first game, this was a great experience but there was so much travelling! When I moved to Bath I played and Captained Bath Buccaneers later becoming their president however at some point I was persuaded to start playing golf so in 2007 with much persuasion from Shaun I changed a stick for a set of clubs joining Farrington Park Golf Club where I took on several roles before moving to Tehidy Park Golf Club.
I am a keen sugarcrafter, baking and decorating cakes for weddings to novelty cakes while in Midsommer Norton I was the local clubs chairperson.
With Shaun we have had many other interests learning to dive with Totnes Sub Aqua Club hence fantastic diving holidays, out of the hockey season we played croquet for Plymouth where we became the national golf croquet champions at Hurlingham.
Once I retired Shaun and I returned back to my village of birth (St.Erth) near my brothers who farm either side of the village unfortunately Shaun died not long after so plans have changed. Thank goodness we chose Tehidy Park Golf club who have been life savers and I am honoured to take on this role of Captaining the Tehidy Ladies section the best in the west!
I am married to Ian and have a daughter Natasha, two step children Grant and Lauren and four grandchildren. I moved from Mount Hawke 5 years ago to be closer to the golf course and now live at Pool, close enough to walk, but, far enough that it makes me think about having another Gin and Tonic!
Not a native of Cornwall, but I moved here when I was 3 when Dad decided he wanted his children to grow up in this beautiful County. I was brought up in Mount Hawke going to school first at the local Primary School then Truro Grammar School and finally to St Austell College. After finishing my A levels I was uncertain of my career path so answered an advert for Trainee Civil Engineering Technicians. Not really knowing what this entailed and only going to the interview for the experience I landed the job! 13 years later and reaching Senior Technician (Bridges) level I left to have a child. Looking after a baby (Natasha) was a challenge in its own right, however, it did give me a chance to review my future plans. I decided that my interest in numbers would lend itself to accountancy so in between naps and nappy changes I put myself through the Accountancy Technician Course. This was the ideal career change at the time as it allowed me to do book keeping from home and work around School runs when the time came. I also worked as a waitress in the evenings to provide the much needed adult conversations. The waitressing led to becoming Front of House Manager and eventually to Managing a busy restaurant in Redruth. Whilst this was an interesting Career choice and I certainly learned a lot about pricing, HR and conflict management it wasn’t ever going to be my final career move. Once Natasha went to ‘Big School’ I decided to return to normal hours of work and landed a job in an electronics manufacturing business in Truro and worked my way up to Operations Manager. This has to have been one of the most interesting jobs I have ever done, no two days were alike and you never knew what the next day would bring. Following the company being purchased by a competitor, and production being moved out of county, the Truro team were all made redundant leading to another forced career change. Whilst I had maintained some of the Book keeping clients I needed another challenge so answered an advert for appraisers and I entered the red tape world of European Funding. Starting as an appraiser for grant applications to various European and Government funding streams I worked my way up to become the Business Investment for Growth Programme Manager. The Programme finished in April 2023 having successfully provided £3m in grants to businesses in Cornwall. This gave me the opportunity to have some time off to enjoy my captaincy before looking for the next challenge. I class myself as being lucky enough to have had a varied career which has led to a breadth of knowledge across a broad spectrum of areas and management styles.
The fun is in the learning.
Having played Netball to both County and Regional level I decided that it was time to retire and join Ian in the sport that he enjoyed. I started my golfing journey at Radnor with my Mum and we quickly progressed to Killiow. It wasn’t long before I was totally hooked and playing more than Ian, although never winning our ‘friendly’ games. Having served our ‘apprenticeship’ at Killiow we joined Tehidy where we have both been members for over 20 years. I am currently the Captain of the Ladies section (2023) and Ian will be Captain of the TPEGS in 2024. During my golfing career I have played for both the County 1st and 2nd Teams and have received my County colours. I continue to represent Tehidy Ladies in both the League and Gammon Teams and maintain a single figure handicap.
Worked in Recruitment since 1981, I completed 20 years in the West End of London in the industry the last 8 years owing my own business. I Moved to Cornwall in January 2000.
I am the owner, founder and Managing Director of Winners Recruitment Agency having created the business and established it in Cornwall in 2001.
Personally I have over 30 years of experience within the Recruitment Industry, I am a true expert in this field. My knowledge and experience is vast and I am well known in the industry. Whether you are a client looking for a potential new hire or a potential employee looking for a new career opportunity I have always prided myself in going the extra mile for what is a people based business.
I totally understand the importance of job satisfaction: of being a valued team member and of working in a happy and forward-thinking environment.
I am an extremely keen golfer and started my golfing career in 2006. Tehidy Park Golf Club is my golfing home. I love to travel and often combine these two passions of mine. I am always trying to improve my game. My Son James is also a member of the golf club he has a young family and doesn’t play as much as he would like but we do get the odd poetry to play together in the mixed competitions. I have been on the Board of Directors at TPGC since the Club changed to a limited Company.
Family/Golf
I live with my Scottish wife (Liz) and our 18 year old (Issy who is studying in London) in Bissoe, near Truro and have been there since 2001 completely renovating and extending our property over many years.
Having joined Tehidy Park Golf Club around 1981/2 as a junior, I have been a member ever since bar some years away whilst I lived in Exeter from 1997 to 2001. I am not a great golfer but got down to 11 around the early 1990’s but never made single figures and currently play off 16. During my time at Tehidy I have played for The Cornish Bowl team around the early to mid 1990’s for a few years winning with Tehidy Park Golf Club in 1994 (I think) and getting to the final the year after. I also played again for them in 2022.
Currently my company is one of the sponsors of Cornwall Golf Union for their inter-county team events and have done so since 2017.
Career
I studied to honours degree level in Civil Engineering at Surrey University and then a further Masters degree in Mining Engineering at the “world famous” Camborne School of Mines, graduating in 1989 and 1990 respectively. Following that I began employment with Cornwall County Council (now Cornwall Council) in the Roads and Bridges Department. Initially I was a bridge designer and latterly was out on site on the construction side following an approved professional training course. I then sat further exams and interviews and became fully qualified as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a full Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) in 1993.
In 1995 I decided to go abroad and worked in South Africa for a side company of Anglo American Corporation installing roads and drainage for townships amongst other schemes.
After returning to the UK in late 1996 I managed to get a job as a Subsidence Loss Adjuster for a large company dealing with buildings insurance claims based in Exeter and Southampton where I stayed until 2001 rising to become the Repair Manager for the south of the UK. At that point, the loss adjusting company was pioneering working from home and at that time as a result, myself and my wife decided we wanted to move back to Cornwall to start a family, which we managed in 2001. Later on I also dealt with many large insurance claims in the Boscastle floods of 2004 which was a national major incident.
I also ran my father’s company for a year (Larry Datson – who ran a chain of SPAR shops and is still a social member at Tehidy Park Golf Club) and then onto his building development company in the mid 2000’s.
In 2008 a deep recession meant development was not profitable so I decided to set up my own company Datson Consulting Ltd specialising in subsidence and mining remediation. This company has been my full time occupation for the last 15 years and has gone from strength to strength building a good reputation in the area.
Recently, during the early pandemic, I was asked to apply to become the highest grade of engineering membership, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) which was a great honour. This was awarded in mid 2020 for services to the public for identifying and remediating subsidence issues throughout the South West of England, and in particular Cornwall, because of the past mining legacy.
Job Experience/Skills
In my earlier jobs including my current role I have a practical skill set which would help the other Directors oversee surveys or problems with buildings and ground issues that may arise at the club. I am involved in the drainage improvements to the rear of the club house that are proposed to reduce risk and potentially prevent future flooding events.
As I run my own company in civil, structural and mining engineering and past other retail companies, plus having been an area manager of a large loss adjusting company, I have plenty of experience in running businesses, both day to day, and in long term planning. This skill set helps assist the other Directors and General Manager steer Tehidy Park Golf Club through the coming years.
I am used to attending and recording meetings and have written technical reports for over 30 years which would all contribute skills that could transfer and assist in the role in helping the other Directors at Tehidy Park Golf Club.
Finally, it is an honour to serve the club that I have had an association with for over 40 years.
Liz our President is a Cornish lady golfer becoming a member of Tehidy Park Golf Club in 1963 previously being a member of Newquay golf club in her home town.
Representing the Club and County Liz has had an illustrious golfing career being County Champion on two occasions 1967 & 1975 and in 1973 she came runner up in the south West championships held at TPGC in her year of being Lady Captain of the Club.
Liz is very proud of her 20 years of playing for the county team she was honoured by the county being their Captain 1988-1991 and County President from 2004-2007.
Liz loved playing in Tehidy Park Ladies team and did so for many years, winning the Gammon Trophy on a number of occasions.
You will see Liz in the Clubhouse and still regularly out on the course and she looks forward to you all enjoying her beloved Tehidy Park Golf Club.
When I was 14 I came into my first shift doing veg prep and dishes as a summer job and I never left. As time went by I found my love for cooking and when I was 18 and under Kath’s guidance I decided that I wanted to be a chef and I went to Cornwall College to do my NVQ level 1, 2 and 3 in Kitchen & Larder.
Now 33 I am joint Head Chef with Kath and still have the passion to provide quality homemade food to the Members and Visitors of Tehidy Park Golf Club as I did when I was 18.
Hopefully I will see you in the Clubhouse enjoying some of our food and the great view across the course.
With Mum (Kathy) being here for 33 years obviously I was born and raised at Tehidy.
I started in kitchen when I was 13 doing just as my brother Chris did.
I then moved into the restaurant and bar but interest was more in cooking.
I studied NVQ Kitchen & Larder Level 1, 2 & 3 at Cornwall College and have worked full time as a chef at Tehidy since then but you will often see me working at the bar or in the restaurant.
I’m proud to be a part of our family team and look forward to seeing your at the club.
Always look to improve and to be the best version of yourself!
Coaching
The BALL tells the truth. The simple fact is that the “Ball tells the Truth” and gives me the information to work back from. From the path of the ball’s flight, the ball’s trajectory, and how spin influences the movement of the ball. These vital clues in the puzzle help me to deconstruct an individual’s swing problem before making changes.
A former Captain of the Cornwall PGA 2007
Among the thousands of lessons I have given, players I’ve coached include the Duke of Bedford, TV and Radio personality Chris Evans, Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss, Wham’s Andrew Ridgley and numerous Formula 3 racing drivers from nearby Silverstone
I always work in collaboration with my clients, identifying achievable targets and helping them to surmount obstacles on the way to reaching them. I’m sympathetic to your requests and swing problems. With great outdoor practice facilities and a new indoor simulator room, Tehidy is the ideal venue to improve your game.
Coaching to the next level…
Since becoming educated and qualified with the Titleist Performance Institute my coaching has been able to go to the next level. I have the tools in place to coach with knowledge and confidence, without having to second guess a physical detail relating to a particular swing problem a client brings.Anyone who wants to invest in their game to become a better golfer will need to take a holistic approach to change.
I guarantee if you can make even a small physical change, say – to your swing, perhaps increasing a small range of movement or limited flexibility, you’re going to move off first base and gain long-term improvement.

I have been managing the bar here since 2015 but have worked for my Mum, Kath the club steward since I was 14.
You could say it runs in the family.
Having worked in every area of the kitchen, bar and restaurant at Tehidy it was clear that the Front of House was more suited to me and that’s where you will find me most days.
I studied Food & Beverage Supervision at Cornwall College and followed it up with degrees in Business & Hospitality & Catering Management from Plymouth University. During this time I worked at large events such as Champagne Waiter in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot and two years as Assistant Restaurant Manager in the Fine Dining Restaurant at the Royal Cornwall Show.
You may find me out on the golf course squeezing a round in between work and my busy family life but if you don’t I look forward to seeing you in the clubhouse for a drink!
